Whorled Milkweed (Asclepias verticillata)

Whorled Milkweed is the minimalist of the milkweed family. Its skinny, pine-needle-like leaves form airy tufts that blend effortlessly into prairie plantings, meadows, and gravel gardens. From midsummer into early fall, it produces clusters of delicate white flowers that seem to glow against the fine green foliage, adding texture and movement without demanding attention. Despite its delicate appearance, this is one of the toughest milkweeds you can grow.

Built for dry prairies and open grasslands, Whorled Milkweed thrives in hot, sunny locations with poor, sandy, or rocky soils where many other plants struggle. Its compact, understated habit makes it easy to tuck between showier flowers and grasses, while still providing outstanding ecological value. For gardeners looking for a drought-tolerant native that quietly supports wildlife, few plants work harder.

Wildlife Value
Like all milkweeds, Whorled Milkweed is a host plant for monarch butterflies, providing food for their caterpillars throughout the growing season. It also supports the larvae of the milkweed tussock moth and several specialized insects that rely on milkweeds to survive. The nectar-rich flowers attract a wide variety of native bees, butterflies and wasps.

Blooms Alongside: little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium), dotted blazing star (Liatris punctata), stiff goldenrod (Solidago rigida), hoary vervain (verbena stricta), prairie coreopsis (Coreopsis palmata), smooth blue aster Symphyotrichum laeve)
