Dotted Blazing Star (Liatris punctata)

Dotted Blazing Star is one of the toughest and most drought-tolerant prairie flowers you can grow. In late summer and early fall, its slender stems are lined with vibrant pinkish purple blooms that seem to float above the surrounding vegetation. Unlike Dense Blazing Star and other species that flower in a dense spike, Dotted Blazing Star produces flowers in smaller clusters along the stem, creating a looser appearance that pairs beautifully with prairie grasses. It is also one of the shorter blazing stars, making it easier to incorporate into smaller gardens and the front to middle of sunny beds. Its compact stature allows the flowers to stand out without overwhelming neighboring plants. Built for survival, Dotted Blazing Star develops a deep taproot that helps it thrive in hot, dry conditions where many other flowers struggle.

Wildlife Value
Dotted Blazing Star is a pollinator magnet, attracting a wide variety of native bees, butterflies, skippers, and other beneficial insects. Its late-season blooms provide an important nectar source when many summer flowers have finished blooming. Monarchs, fritillaries, swallowtails, and numerous native bee species frequently visit the flowers, making it one of the most valuable late-season plants for supporting pollinators.

Blooms Alongside: little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium), stiff goldenrod (Solidago rigida), hoary vervain (Verbena stricta), aromatic aster (Symphyotrichum oblongifolium)
