Wild Senna (Senna hebecarpa)

Wild Senna is a true midsummer workhorse. It's tall, confident, and full of presence while offering exceptional pollinator support. The foliage is soft, finely divided, and almost shrubby, giving it a silhouette that lands somewhere between a tall perennial and a small understory tree. In a garden full of spires, daisies, and grasses, it immediately reads as something different. After flowering, Senna produces long, dark seed pods that add late-season interest and movement, especially when backlit in fall.

Native to southeastern Wisconsin prairies, savannas, and open woodlands, Wild Senna thrives in full sun and average to slightly moist soils. It establishes with a deep root system and forms sturdy clumps over time, making it especially useful as a structural backbone plant in larger gardens.
