Wild Golden Glow (Rudbeckia laciniata)
Wild Golden Glow, or often referred to as Cutleaf Coneflower, is a classic tallgrass prairie native with a loose, almost untamed feel. Its nodding yellow rays and green central cones read softer and more natural than the garden coneflowers people are used to, giving it an unmistakably wild and effortless look. Its height and bloom time are uncommon in understory/woodland edge plants, where most are done blooming before summer begins and max out at ~2' tall. We love using it to bridge the height between tall tree canopies and lower plantings and as a late-summer privacy screen.
Wild Golden Glow shines in large-scale plantings and places where it has room to move. It’s a great fit for:
-
Rain gardens and low spots that hold moisture
-
Woodland edges and transitional areas
-
Naturalized spaces where plants are allowed to spread and mingle
In these settings, its height and colony-forming habit create a lush, layered look that feels intentional rather than unruly.

Wildlife Value
Wild Golden Glow supports a wide range of native bees, butterflies, and beetles, and its late-summer bloom timing makes it especially valuable as other nectar sources drop off. The tall stems also provide structure and cover for insects and birds through fall and winter when left standing.
Blooms Alongside
Sweet Joe Pye weed (Eutrochium purpureum), Prairie ironweed (Vernonia fasciculata), Culver’s root (Veronicastrum virginicum), Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis)
