Prairie Spiderwort (Tradescantia occidentalis)

Prairie Spiderwort is one of those plants that feels both familiar and quietly unusual. Its  blue, three-petaled flowers open fresh each morning, hovering above grassy, arching foliage that brings softness and movement to the garden. The blooms are short-lived on any given day, but the plant flowers steadily for weeks, so there’s always something happening.

Compared to its close relative Ohio Spiderwort (Tradescantia ohiensis), Prairie Spiderwort has a more refined look. It tends to stay a bit shorter and more compact, with narrower foliage and a cleaner overall habit. Both are excellent plants, but Prairie Spiderwort really stands out for gardeners looking for something that reads lighter and more intentional in dry to medium soils. It weaves beautifully among grasses and early-summer perennials, adding color without overwhelming its neighbors.

After its main bloom period, the foliage remains an important textural element. If it starts to look tired later in summer, it responds well to a simple cut-back, quickly sending up fresh new growth.
