Prairie Smoke (Geum triflorum)

Prairie Smoke is one of the most uniquely beautiful plants you can add to a garden. Early in the season, it sends up nodding, reddish-pink flowers that feel subtle at first and as the blooms fade they transform into soft, feathery plumes that catch the light and give the plant its signature “smoke” effect. It’s one of the first natives to get interesting in spring, and it holds that interest well beyond its bloom time.

Low-growing and easy to tuck in along edges, paths, or rock gardens, Prairie Smoke works especially well in dry, sunny spots where you want something that feels unique. It’s tough, long-lived, and adds texture you just don’t get from most other plants.

Growing Conditions
Light: Full sun to light shade
Soil: Dry to medium; prefers well-drained, sandy or rocky soils
Height: 6–18 inches
Spread: 1–1.5 feet
Zones: 3–7
Bloom time: April through June (with long-lasting seed heads following)

Wildlife Value
Prairie Smoke provides early-season nectar for native bees, especially small solitary bees emerging in spring. Its early bloom time makes it an important resource when not much else is flowering yet. The plant also offers structure and cover at ground level for beneficial insects.

Blooms Alongside: golden alexander (Zizia aurea), prairie alumroot (Heuchera richardsonii), wild columbine (Aquilegia canadensis), Blue Wild Indigo (baptisms australis)
