Prairie Sage (Artemisia ludoviciana)
Prairie Sage is a silvery, soft-textured perennial that thrives in dry, sunny gardens. Its fuzzy gray leaves provide a welcomed contrast to the endless shades of green that make up the color palette of a Midwestern prairie. The result is rich dimension, abundant texture, and a subtly coastal feel. The small yellowish blooms appear in late summer but aren't the draw compared to its standout foliage. Spreading steadily by rhizomes, Prairie Sage forms low mounds that help break up all the green and add a very 'designed' or intentional feel.
This tough native prefers well-drained, sandy soils and full sun, making it a reliable choice for drought-tolerant plantings and prairie restorations. Deer tend to avoid it due to its aromatic foliage, so you can use it to surround/shield plants that usually get munched.
