Palm Sedge (Carex muskingumensis)
Palm Sedge is one of the most ornamental native sedges, known for its soft green foliage arranged in a whorled, palm-like pattern around upright stems that has almost a tropical effect. It adds so much texture and form to shade gardens or any place that benefits from a fine, flowing backdrop. Since it can handle a good amount of sun, we like to use it as a cohesive, unifying element areas with varied sunlight, all the way from shade to full sun. It forms graceful, arching clumps that hold their shape well throughout the season.
Growing Conditions
Light: Full shade to full sun with adequate moisture
Soil: Moist to medium, rich soils; tolerates wet feet and occasional flooding
Height: 2–3 feet
Spread: Slowly spreading clumps via short rhizomes
Zones: 3–8
Wildlife Value
Provides habitat and nesting material for native bees and cover for insects and amphibians. Like many sedges, it supports the caterpillars of several native butterflies and moths. Its dense clumping habit helps stabilize soil and prevent erosion in wet areas.
Blooms Alongside:
Virginia Bluebells (Mertensia virginica), Wild Geranium (Geranium maculatum), Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata), Golden Alexanders (Zizia aurea)
