Nodding Onion (Allium cernuum)

Nodding Onion is especially charming. In early to midsummer, slender stems rise above clumps of narrow, grass-like foliage, each one bending gracefully beneath a cluster of small, bell-shaped pink flowers. The blooms seem to hang from the stems like little bouquets, giving the plant its common name. It brings movement and softness to prairie plantings without taking up much space.

This is one of those plants that works beautifully tucked among larger perennials and grasses, where its fine texture and nodding flowers can peek through the planting. It thrives in sunny, well-drained soils and is remarkably drought tolerant once established. After flowering, the papery seedheads remain attractive and provide additional texture, while the foliage often stays tidy and unobtrusive throughout the growing season.

Wildlife Value
Nodding Onion is an excellent source of nectar for native bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Its flowers are particularly attractive to small bees and flies, while the foliage and bulbs are generally avoided by deer and rabbits. As a member of the onion family, it also has the characteristic pungent compounds that make it unappealing to many browsing animals.
