Carex sprengelii, or commonly referred to as long-beaked sedge, is a clump-forming sedge with fine textured, arching green foliage. It grows in dense, mound-like clusters, offering an elegant and soft addition to gardens, especially in shady or woodland settings. This sedge is a perfect choice for naturalizing in moist, well-drained soils, and it works well in both woodland and meadow gardens. It's a cool-season plant, meaning it starts growing in early spring when most native plants are still dormant.
Growing Conditions:
-
Light: Part shade to full shade
-
Soil: Moist, well-drained soils (tolerates sandy and rocky soils)
-
Moisture: Moderate moisture; drought-tolerant once established
-

-
Zones: 4–9
-
Bloom time: Late spring to early summer (May–June)
Wildlife Value: Carex sprengelii is a host plant for several species of butterflies, including the Pale-washed Skipper. Its dense clumps also provide shelter and cover for small wildlife, making it an important plant for biodiversity in garden settings. Birds will also feed on its seeds through the fall.
