June Grass (Koeleria macrantha)

June Grass is a small, early-blooming native grass that quietly does a lot of work. It stays compact and tidy with fine, narrow leaves that emerge early in spring and quickly form soft clumps. By early summer, it sends up pale, silvery-green flower heads that catch the light and move easily in the breeze.

Unlike many prairie grasses that wait until midsummer to show themselves, June Grass is already active when the garden is just waking up. That early presence makes it especially valuable for filling space, adding texture, and giving structure to spring plantings before taller warm-season grasses take over. Because it blooms and finishes early, June Grass pairs beautifully with later-emerging warm-season grasses, creating a layered, season-long rhythm. We use it as a connective layer that helps everything around it feel more cohesive.
