Indian Grass (Sorghastrum nutans)

Indian Grass is one of the great backbone plants of the tallgrass prairie. Its upright blue-green foliage forms a fountain-like clump, sending up tall flowering stems topped with beautiful golden-bronze plumes in late summer. The flowers catch the light beautifully and develop into airy seedheads that persist well into fall and winter, adding movement and texture long after most perennials have finished blooming. 

Indian Grass is exceptionally tough and somewhat aggressive. Its deep root system makes it highly drought tolerant once established.

Wildlife Value
Indian Grass provides valuable habitat for a wide range of prairie wildlife. Its flowers and foliage support numerous insects, while its seeds are eaten by songbirds and other seed-eating wildlife in fall and winter. Its dense clumps also provide cover and nesting habitat for birds and small animals.
