Big Bluestem (Andropogon gerardii)

Big Bluestem is often called the king of the prairie, and few plants have shaped the Midwestern landscape more than this towering native grass. Its blue-green foliage emerges in spring before growing into impressive upright clumps that sway gracefully in the wind. By late summer, distinctive seed heads appear at the tips of the stems, resembling a turkey's foot and giving the plant one of its most recognizable features.

Beneath the soil, Big Bluestem develops an enormous root system that can extend several feet deep, helping it withstand drought and stabilize soil. Its strong vertical form provides structure throughout the growing season, while its foliage turns shades of copper, bronze, and reddish-purple in fall. Whether planted in a prairie garden, meadow, or naturalized landscape, Big Bluestem brings movement, texture, and a sense of place that few other plants can match.

Wildlife Value
Big Bluestem is a host plant for numerous skipper butterflies and moths, whose caterpillars feed on its foliage. Its seeds provide food for songbirds and other wildlife, while the dense clumps offer nesting material, shelter, and overwintering habitat for insects. As a foundation species of the tallgrass prairie, Big Bluestem supports an incredible diversity of life both above and below ground.
