Squirrel Tail Grass (Hordeum jubatum)
Squirrel Tail Grass is a graceful, highly ornamental native grass known for its soft, feathery seed heads that resemble a squirrel’s tail. These silky, light-green to purplish-pink plumes emerge in late spring to early summer, adding movement and texture to your garden. As the seeds mature, the plumes turn golden and shimmer in the wind. This cool-season grass starts growing early in the spring, thrives in a variety of conditions but prefers open, sunny areas. It's short lived but readily self-seeds, and due to its extensive root system and ability to thrive in various soil conditions (even salty or alkaline) make it effective in stabilizing recently disturbed areas and preventing erosion.
Note: As beautiful as this grass is, the dry seed heads become sharp and can harm pets, especially dogs, if they become lodged in ears, noses, or paws. Avoid planting in areas where dogs play or roam.

Wildlife Value:
Squirrel Tail Grass provides cover for small wildlife and supports a range of insect species. It serves as a host plant for grasshoppers, and while it is not a primary food source for specialist pollinators, it contributes to the food web and habitat diversity in open landscapes. Birds, especially sparrows and finches, feed on its seeds in late summer and fall.
